"Ivory" Black Friday for the Art Lover

Wed, Nov 27th, 2013

Wondering what to give the watercolorist or art appreciator in your life this holiday season? Last year, I posted a few gift ideas for painting materials - paper, brushes and paints. Since everyone loves a good book, here are a few of my suggestions: Art and Nature Appreciation, by George Howard Opdyke and The Art Spirit, by Robert Henri are classics. Often quoted, both are wonderful compilations of inspiring essays about painting, as well as seeing and appreciating the world through the painter's eye.

Looking for books for the watercolor collector or art enthusiast? The Art of Ogden Pleissner, by Peter Bergh, Winslow Homer Watercolors, by Helen Cooper, the Watercolors of John Singer Sargent, by Carl Little, and John Singer Sargent Watercolors by Erica E. Hirshler and Teresa A. Carbone include great reproductions and offer insight into the artists' lives and methods. Yet another excellent book, Awash in Color: Homer, Sargent, and the Great American Watercolor, by Sue Welsh Reed and Carol Troyen, features watercolors in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. American Traditions in Watercolors, edited by Susan E. Strickler, surveys watercolor history through highlighting paintings in the Worcester Art Museum.

For a watercolor beginner, I recommend The Complete Guide to Watercolor Painting, by Edgar Whitney, Painting with Light, by Betty L. Schlemm and The Watercolor Book: Materials and Techniques for Today's Artists, by David Dewey. These books are useful for someone looking for a place to start, as well as to master some basic concepts.

These "oldies but goodies" have been printed and reprinted for good reason. Ways With Watercolor (1949) by Ted Kautzky, in addition to Painting Trees & Landscapes in Watercolor (1952) and are still popular today. My first-edition copy of Ways With Watercolor is the most cherished book on my shelf. John Pike's Watercolor and John Pike Paints Watercolor are also favorites. All four beautifully illustrated books are some of the best watercolor instruction books available.

Intermediate and advanced watercolorists will enjoy Solving the Mystery of Watercolor by David Taylor and Ron Ranson, Watercolor Impressionists also by Ranson, and Mastering Atmosphere & Mood in Watercolor, by Joseph Zbukvic. While Breaking the Rules of Watercolor, by Burt Silverman, offers an explanation of his truly unique method of layering multiple washes onto hot-pressed paper approach.

Many painters are looking for a little help with a specific problem. Landscape artists should have: Landscape Painting in Watercolor, by Zoltan Szabo, Painting Buildings in Watercolor, by Ranulph Bye, Marine Painting in Watercolor, by Edmond J. Fitzgerald, and Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, by John F. Carlson. For portrait painters, Portrait Painting in Watercolor, by Charles Reid is a highly regarded watercolor text. The Watercolor Fix-It Book, by Tony Van Hasselt & Judy Wagner and Robert Wade's Watercolor Workshop Handbook, by Robert Wade, offer techniques for common watercolor problems.

A subscription to a magazine is the gift that keeps on giving all year. Both Watercolor Artist Magazine and The Artist's Magazine are available in print or in digital formal (delivered by email to your computer's inbox). American Art Review features articles about artists and shows from the Colonial Period to the late 20th Century.

May the gift of love, peace and happiness be yours this holiday season!
