Brushes make a terrific present for the artist in your life.

Holiday Gift Ideas for the Art Lover

Sat, Dec 8th, 2012

Here are a few gift ideas for the art lover in your life. . . .

Brushes make a terrific present and really good ones can be purchased with any budget. I recently saw the Loew Cornell, 7100, One Stroke - Golden Taklon Brush on Amazon with prices ranging from $3.99 for the 1/2" size (this is a great deal!) to $16.91 for the 1" size.

The Raphaël Kolinsky Red Sable Fine Pointed Round Series 8404 is perhaps THE BEST watercolor brush on the market today. I found this offer from Blick Art Supply on-line for a Size 6 Raphaël Kolinsky Brush for $42.48. Or you can purchase their "Value Package of 3" for $62.95 - buy one Size 8 Brush and receive one Size 2 and one Size 0 Brushes FREE.

A sky wash brush is a must for working large and Cheap Joe's Art Stuff is having a sale on the Loew Cornell Golden Taklon, Series 7750 Sky Wash, 2". At $26.39, it's a good price!

Watercolorists go through a lot of paper and a fine handmade sheet of watercolor paper can make the difference between success and failure. I've been using Cheap Joe's Kilimanjaro Natural White 140 lb Watercolor Paper for my class demonstrations; it's well made and reasonably priced. A pack of 25 sheets is on sale for $69.79. For a splurge (at around $10 a sheet) try Arches 300 lb Cold Pressed Paper. Jerry's Artarama is offering a 5 pack with a bonus sheet for only $54.95.

Low on paint? ASW is an internet art supply company that carries a large selection with good prices. My students use a lot of Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine, Cadmium Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Red Medium among other colors. Winsor & Newton Artist's Watercolors is the brand I prefer and ASW carries all the colors on my palette. For a complete list of colors and materials, visit my class page at the Ridgewood Art Institute and scroll to the bottom.

Why not give the gift of lessons to your artist in one of my classes at the Ridgewood Art Institute? The Barn's spacious, north-lit studio provides a unique experience and is an inspiring place to paint. A couple of hours, even once or twice a week, can make a huge difference in a person's artistic development.

I offer watercolor classes for adults every Wednesday evening, 7 pm - 10 pm and Thursday morning, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm with instruction in still life, florals, landscape and portrait. Lessons are $100 per calendar month or $30 per session. I also teach a young peoples' class every Monday afternoon, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm, $30 per session. Contact me at joel@watercolorpop.com to purchase a gift certificate in any amount or for more information.

For a really special gift, why not consider giving an original painting? A framed, ready-to hang, watercolor is a wonderful gift for the art lover. An original painting hanging on a wall distinguishes an environment, plus it is a great conversation piece. The imagery may remind the recipient of a special place they once visited or enjoyed. It's a gift that lasts a lifetime!

In the gallery section of my website, I have many watercolors in various subjects and paintings in multiple sizes. All are framed, matted and ready to be displayed. Prices include shipping. And, of course, all purchases include a 21-day, money back guarantee. If for some reason you are not satisfied, return the painting and your purchase will be fully refunded (less shipping expenses).

May the spirit of the holiday season be with you throughout the year and may we always remember the greatest gifts are family and friends.

Happy Holidays!
